With freedom, democracy and self-determination in mind as guiding principals, John Hancock Financial offers the essay competition, Promise of America: Explore*Dream*Discover. As history is a critical subject for high school students, the competition is designed to augment historical studies. The essay competition is an opportunity to enhance critical thinking, research and writing skills. Additionally, students may utilize their participation in the essay competition as an educational experience to reference in their college application process. The essay competition is open to all high school students affiliated with Mentor Michigan in the Detroit Metro area.
Essay Guidelines:
Each essay should be no more than 500 words, double spaced, typed in 12 point font. Each essay must cite 5 sources of information; three of which must be non-internet. Wikepedia will not be allowed as a source. Please include bibliography with your essay. Students should clearly answer the 3 questions below in essay format to include an introduction, body and conclusion.
The essay competition requires the students to answer the following three questions:
1)
By exploring and learning about John Hancock’s past contributions to American independence and freedom, how did he help shape our country’s guiding principles?
2) In the present day, what dreams and inspirations do you have to keep John Hancock’s promise to America?
3) Given the lessons learned from John Hancock how can you help your community to discover new ideas for a bright future?
All students and mentors who participate will be recognized for their efforts and achievements in completing the essay. In addition, each student will receive a medal of honor in recognition of his/her hard work in completing the essay. A judging committee will meet to select five finalists.
The Essay Competition Finalists:
The five finalists will present their essays to a prestigious group of business and civic leaders including Detroit’s First Gentleman Dan Mulhern and John Hancock Senior Executive Vice President James Gallagher. Students will be judged on essay content, inspiration and articulation. The selection decision will be made at the conclusion of the presentations.
The judging competition for the 5 finalists will be held at The Henry Ford Museum in Dearborn, Michigan. This venue is most appropriate for Promise of America: Explore*Dream*Discover competition as Henry Ford wanted to create a museum that "shares ideas and ingenuity. An institution committed to telling the stories of people determined to change the world around them and nudge civilization in a different direction." This venue is created to inspire people to learn and be leaders to help shape a better future.
John Hancock, was one of these people, are you? We want to hear about your ideas for a better future.
