Best Buddies in Action: A Chat with our own Dudley Williams

Best Buddies in Action: A Chat with our own Dudley Williams

Best Buddies is a global volunteer movement and non-profit organization dedicated to enhancing the lives of people with intellectual and developmental disabilities (IDD). The Best Buddies Jobs program was started to meet the needs of one of the organization’s founding pillars- integrated employment. This past October John Hancock was lucky enough to be matched with Dudley Williams, a dedicated employee who is now a Marketing Coordinator in our Sponsorship & Event Marketing department. Dudley is an active participant in many Best Buddies programs and was excited to share a bit about his experience!

How long have you been associated with Best Buddies, Dudley?

I’ve been working with Best Buddies for three years. I have helped out with their golf tournaments, Best Buddies networking events, and the Evening of Opportunity. I was also nominated to give a speech at the 2013 Best Buddies Challenge about my experience with the program. I have made lots of friends through my involvement with Best Buddies.

Aside from your role here at John Hancock, what other roles have you held through Best Buddies?

I was the Human Resources Assistant at the Sheraton Hotel in Boston where I was in charge of filing, photocopying and answering the office telephones. I liked the busy nature of the hotel industry. I also worked at the Minority Business Development Agency (MBDA) and the Cambridge Friends School.

What do you like best about working in Sponsorship & Event Marketing here at John Hancock?

I love getting to meet new people and trying all sorts of new projects. I have enjoyed learning about all of the effort and preparation that goes into planning the Boston Marathon, and other sponsorship events, from a business perspective.

Best Buddies set you up with a job coach through the Jobs Program. Can you tell us about her?

My relationship with Hallie is great.  I have been working with her for almost a year and a half now. She is always willing to help me out if I’m having any job related issues, including working on my professionalism.

Will you be participating in the Best Buddies Challenge this year?

Yes, I will be participating in the 5k walk during the challenge. A few of the people I know from the Best Buddies Jobs program will be in attendance as well.

Where do you see yourself in five years, Dudley?

I want to continue to grow and develop at John Hancock to be prepared for other opportunities that may come my way.

Dudley brings a determined and positive attitude to everything he does in the office. Whether he’s sorting Boston Marathon banners or enjoying a slice of pizza in the cafeteria, his ever present smile is a daily inspiration to coworkers and friends alike!
