Health and wellness

We believe competitive, comprehensive health coverage is just the start of a great benefits package.  At John Hancock, we go beyond health insurance to promote and support healthy lifestyles. 

Medical Coverage

Employees have a choice of three plans with medical benefits through United Health Care and pharmacy benefits through Express Scripts. Employees working in Boston’s Back Bay office also have access to near-site primary care offices through One Medical. Local HMOs are available for those living in Hawaii.

Critical Illness Plan

Provides a lump sum payment if an employee or an eligible family member is diagnosed with a covered medical condition, such as cancer, a heart attack or stroke. Benefit payments may be used to help pay for expenses generally not covered by medical and disability income coverage.    

Dental Coverage

Covers preventive and a percentage of basic and major dental services, both in- and out-of-network.

Vision Care Coverage

Helps pay the cost of eye exams, glasses and contact lenses, both in- and out-of-network.

Domestic Partner Coverage

Employees eligible for benefits can enroll a same-gender or opposite-gender domestic partner (certain requirements apply).

HealthMatters

Whether you want to focus on fitness, nutrition or stress-management, HealthMatters offers healthy living incentives that can benefit you financially. Take a health questionnaire, participate in a challenge or attend one of the many seminars and events offered throughout the year.

Flexible Spending Accounts (FSAs)

Allow employees to pay for certain eligible health care and dependent care expenses up to allowable limits in pre-tax dollars.

Stay Fit Benefit

Reimburses employees up to $400 for a gym membership, exercise/fitness classes led by a certified instructor, Weight Watchers and tobacco/smoking cessation programs. Boston employees additionally have access to onsite fitness centers.

Advocacy Services

Offers assistance locating doctors and hospitals covered by your health benefits, timely resolutions of health care billing and insurance claim disputes, facilitation of second opinions and more.

Boston Marathon Employee Training Program

John Hancock encourages employees to participate in the Boston Marathon by volunteering or running the historic race. As a program participant, each employee runner is required to raise money for select non-profit organizations.

Our incredible training program was created to ensure that employee runners have the best experience possible. In addition to regular clinics and expert training manuals, the program also offers:

  • Coaching and training insights from 1983 Boston champion Greg Meyer and additional elite athletes
  • Supported long runs
  • Fundraising support
  • Social networking opportunities with colleagues

Financial

As a leading financial services provider, we're determined to help our employees work towards the financial goals they’ve set. Our 401(k), pension, stock ownership and other programs help them take steps to meet those goals.

401(k) Savings Plan

Allows employees to make pre-tax, post-tax and Roth 401(k) contributions, and offers a variety of investment options. Employees’ pre-tax and/or Roth 401(k) contributions are matched dollar-for-dollar up to 4% and are fully vested in company matching contributions after three years of service. New hires are automatically enrolled and can roll over an eligible retirement plan balance at any time.

Cash Balance Pension Plan

This plan, which is 100% company-funded, provides additional retirement savings through company contributions of at least 4% and interest credits. Eligible employees are automatically enrolled in the plan upon hire, and vest after three years of eligible service.    

Global Share Ownership Plan

Eligible employees have the opportunity to share in the company's future with this plan. Eligible employees can contribute 1-5% of eligible pay to purchase shares, and the company will match 25% of those contributions (up to $2,000).

Life Insurance

Basic Life Insurance and Basic Accidental Death and Dismemberment (AD&D) Insurance are provided by the company. Optional Employee and Dependent Life Insurance, and Optional AD&D insurance are also available.

Accident Plan

The Accident Plan provides a fixed lump sum payment (based on a schedule of benefits) when an employee or an eligible family member suffers a covered injury or undergo covered testing, medical services, or treatment due to an accident.    

Disability

Short-Term Disability (STD) provides financial security in the event of absence from work due to illness or non-occupational injury, up to six months. Long-Term Disability (LTD) is designed to protect employees who are disabled longer than six months.

FinanceMatters

FinanceMatters aims to help employees meet their financial goals and objectives by providing financial information, support, solutions and cost savings to employees. Under the Financial Planning Benefit, employees can be reimbursed up to $400 for qualified financial planning expenses each year. Discounts are available on John Hancock products such as 529 college savings plans and John Hancock mutual funds.

Discount Auto and Home Insurance

Employees can purchase auto and home insurance at special group discount rates.

Career development

Our support for individual development and career growth includes tuition assistance for work-related education and a dedicated in-house Leadership & Learning team which offers leadership, technical and professional development programs.

We know that achieving a healthy work/life balance is critical to long-term productivity and success, so John Hancock offers a number of programs designed to help you and your family.

Vacation Time

Competitive vacation time allotment is based on employment status, job grade and length of service.

Holidays

The company recognizes nine annual holidays, including eight company-wide holidays and one floating holiday.

Three Personal Days per year
Up to three Family Care Days per year to care for an ill family member
Up to five Sick Days per year
Up to 12 weeks Paid Parental Leave following the birth or adoption of a child

Backup Child Care and Adult/Elder Care

Center-based back-up child care and in-home child and adult/elder care services are available for employees who work anywhere in the U.S.

Adoption Benefit

Reimburses up to $3,000 of eligible expenses toward the cost of adopting a child.

Pet Insurance

Employees can take advantage of special group discount rates to take care of their furry friends.

Flex-Time Hours and Flexible Work Arrangements

Flex-time hours and flexible work arrangements, including telecommuting, may be available subject to management discretion, business needs and department head approval.

Employee Assistance Program (EAP)

Offered free of charge, 24 hours a day, this confidential coaching and resource/referral service can help employees and their families deal with life's challenges, including legal and financial.

Commuter Benefits

This national program covers train, light rail, bus, subway, vanpool, ferry and parking (at or near work, at or near public transportation for your commute) - anywhere. Employees can enroll in the commuter benefit online through Wage Works. Employees pay for this benefit through pre-tax payroll deduction up to IRS limits.

Group Legal Plan

Employees can purchase legal services at a group discount rate.

Covers a range of services (wills, mortgages and identity theft) and offers a nationwide network of attorneys.

Community engagement

From the Boston Marathon to the MLK program summer jobs program, John Hancock has a long history of supporting innovative programs with strategic partners to help those most in need in the communities where we live and work.

Matching Gifts Program

Provides a company match for employees' donations to a variety of eligible non-profit organizations.

Volunteer Opportunities

John Hancock is proud to be a leader in corporate volunteerism in Boston, with thousands of hours committed to serving our community each year.  Employees are given one paid Community Spirit Day to volunteer at a registered charity or not-for-profit organization.
