BOSTON, September 24, 2025 – Today, John Hancock, a unit of Toronto-based Manulife, has been named to Fortune’s 2025 Change the World list, among 50 companies driving a positive impact through their core business strategies. The only life insurer on the 11th annual list, John Hancock is being recognized for its industry-leading John Hancock Vitality Program, which has transformed the life insurance industry by providing customers with education, support, incentives, and rewards for the everyday things they do to live longer, healthier, better lives.
John Hancock began offering Vitality in 2015 in response to a troubling shift in Americans' health: so-called lifestyle diseases including heart disease, cancer, stroke and diabetes have become the leading cause of death in the U.S., and lifestyle factors — such as physical inactivity, poor nutrition, excessive alcohol and smoking — significantly contribute to these diseases. John Hancock is the first life insurer to embrace behavioral insurance with the program, rewarding Vitality members for everyday activities that correlate with a longer, healthier, better life – from a good night’s sleep and daily exercise, to meditation, regular physicals, early detection and preventative screenings.
"This meaningful recognition from Fortune is a testament to the work our colleagues at John Hancock do day in and day out to put our customers’ well-being at the center of everything we do," said Brooks Tingle, President and CEO, John Hancock. "We realized long ago that we have an opportunity and perhaps even a responsibility as a life insurer to focus more intentionally on the health of our customers and communities and, in adopting a shared-value business approach to do so, have been able to make more of an impact than ever before. Thank you to Fortune for honoring our team among the many impressive companies recognized this year and encouraging us to remain steadfast in our commitment to help Americans live longer, healthier, better lives.”
The John Hancock Vitality Program has evolved significantly over the last decade to connect customers with the latest tools and innovations so they can take proactive steps to better understand and make more informed choices about their health. Customers are highly engaged (most John Hancock Vitality members engage with the program 20-30x per month)1 and report improved health indicators: members take twice as many steps as the average American;2 52 percent of members with high blood pressure reported bringing readings within a healthy range; 45 percent reported reducing their body mass index; and 63 percent reported bringing their cholesterol within a healthy range.3
As part of its commitment to offering access to the latest advances in science and technology, John Hancock was the first life insurer to offer eligible customers in the John Hancock Vitality Program access to both GRAIL’s multi-cancer early detection test, Galleri® and Prenuvo’s state-of-the-art whole body MRI scans. As a result, many customers have informed John Hancock that they have experienced life-changing, and in some cases potentially lifesaving, findings through the program. One of those customers, Sandy, discovered early-stage colon cancer through the program’s access to the Galleri test. She shared her impactful story with John Hancock (watch here).
